LEGO always have at least one GREAT Technic set available - This is one such, at the moment there are 2 (or 3 depending on where you live)The last epic retired recently (The UniMog) if you missed it - well - you probably wish you hadn't!This set is probably getting close to the end of production, so you may want to consider getting this very soon.At the moment Amazon are out of stock - so you will find this available sold by the re-sellers at highly inflated prices :(The RRP (Which should be considered the MAXIMUM) is $199.99+tax - your best options are to wait for Amazon to restock it OR go direct to LEGO.OK what makes this set special is basically the Servo Motor - this is the first and only (current) set to have this, what it means is once built you have a decent RC vehicle that WORKS via wireless infrared remote - the Servo Motor allows steering via the remote... so you CAN take it rock crawling, just be a little careful - it isn't a "proper" RC vehicle (with tough prop shafts and axles)I believe the servo will appear in other models later, as it is available to purchase on it's own, which indicates LEGO intend to use it more. The build is of average complexity, and should be manageable by most technically inclined young teens, some a little younger as well- and it's fun for "older folks" too!You don't need an excuse to buy LEGO as an adult - there are millions of us Adult Fans of LEGO...There about something in Lego's quality and customer service that I've learned to appreciate over the years. I bought this Crawler to my 9 years old youngest boy and the moments of joy and happiness are certainly worth the money. The (very long) instruction manuals divided into three parts that carefully describe every stage with some of the parts (like the rods) pictured in real life size. The model itself is very detailed and the mechanical gear parts are highly detailed and simply amazing. One tiny bit of disappointment my boy had was seeing that the vehicle itself actually move very slowly so I had to explain him the speed/force relationship with vehicles, but other than that you get a real in-House 4x4 vehicle that is fun to control and seeing it going over all the mess there is in his room...probably the only thing that can run in his room safely :)This LEGO set is probably one of the best ones of all times. I love my Lego Crawler and suggest it for anyone. I have upgraded my truck to make every thing perfect in order to give it more performance. Building the truck and modifying it is really exciting and the truck easily lets you upgrade different gears, suspension, and even tires and motors. But overall it is a good little rig. you're practically building a slower version of an RC crawler. the only things that I didnt like after awhile were the power, torque and slowness of the rig. But after modding the vehicle with posse in front and rear(straight-axling) adding different gears for more torque and customizing a million things with the chassis and body, along with putting 1.9 Mudslinger tires on the stock wheels (tires can be found at RC4WD.com) the truck runs awesomely. So entire build took me about 8 hrs with short breaks in between and some food but overall very fun set to build. Make sure when you install the center gears for front and rear differential same way like large gear on same side for front and rear if crossed Front wheels will turn forward and rear wheels the opposite but wasn’t all that hard to correct just flip truck over and a little disassembly was needed. And to increase speed swap the outer 2 gears around for front and rear. This is a fantastic kit. My 6 year old boy took a week (mostly evenings) to build it. I just helped out on some sections where he misread the instructions or couldn't figure it out.Overall we had loads of fun with the finished kit.One note is the gearing is very low. It will climb obstacles with ease, but cruising speed is slow. It's like a 4WD engaged in low transfer box.I liked this set a lot! It's the first time I am ordering from Amazon, and they're very accurate to when they are going to deliver. This set is very good, but I do have a few complaints. First, the set uses horrible gear ratios. It also uses differentials which make it bad at climbing. Other than that this is quite impressive! This is easily the most impressive Lego set I've ever built. The fact that it's a functional, high-torque remote control crawler is amazing. Everything is built out of legos, save for a couple of electric engines and the remote. Everything else- transmission, suspension, etc, is built by the user. It has a fair bit of educational value, because you will put together the differential and just about everything else.We bought this Lego 4X4 for our Grandson for Christmas last year but bought it AGAIN this year FOR HIM because it was such a BIG HIT!! He Loves this product. We wanted the Limited Edition 4X4 but they were too expensive...He was 8 with the first one so don't go by the ages, go by your child's interest in the products and ability(unlimited imagination)Big present bought for eldest for Xmas - he's obsessed with all things like this and has the unimog and other lego technics already. Built in 4 hours, already modified it by adding another motor and plays with it daily. Great present for focussed technological builders!2 day build for a very competent 10 year old lego addict. My 14 yr old son was jealous.Shows how a differential gear is built, so opens up their engineering minds. As a sideline, I noticed after he built this, he went back to other technic kits and started hacking his own creations. This is one of THE best LEGO kits ever made. It really is great! The only model I've ever built that involves disassembly during the build process. It's rugged - and it works really well. Buy it!it is perhaps the only lego technics model that comes complete with remotes etc and moves on 4 wheels by remote. haven't made the 2nd model though. lego should include both catalogs in future models.Superb model, good clear instructions, runs very well after building.
