The Gatehouse Raid is a fun addition to the latest Castle series by Lego. While a bit pricier than the average set, it becomes apparent why just by looking at the amount of pieces and the side. The Gatehouse is a fairly large structure, with lots of neat little features that make it a great fit to the Castle line. It also comes with four mini-figs: a King's Knight, a King's Soldier (the "good guys"), and a Dragon Knight and a Dragon Soldier (the "bad guys").One of my son's favorite aspects is the defensive catapult at the top of the tower. It has a flexible rubber piece that allows you to fire the catapult more naturally, which is fun.Another really cool aspect is that there are connecting hole pieces on either side of the Gatehouse, which means it can inter-lock with other structures in the Castle series, including the King's Castle (Lego 70404) itself. No additional assembly or special know-how required -- just disconnect and reconnect the various "segments" and create a variety of different configurations. It's a brilliant idea, one that reminds me of some of the older Space sets from the 70's and 80's that I played with as a kid.We had two main complaints with this set:1.) There are a LOT of small pieces. It can make building this quite a chore, not to mention something best done by kids who aren't tempted to put the pieces in their mouths, and away from curious pets. Among the pieces is what looks like a chunk of crystal or gold. It's meant to sit atop the tower, although you can see it on the ground in the product box art. I'm not sure what the logic is behind this piece -- there's no other treasure pieces here.2.) There are two roof elements (the brown pieces flanking each side of the Gatehouse, meant to look like wood). Aesthetically, these look great, as there aren't many wood elements in the new Castle line beyond just accessories. However, these two segments sit on hinges. To me, hinges imply movement. But the way the sides of the Gatehouse are designed, you can literally only move those pieces maybe a 1/2 centimeter, and doing so can cause them to pop off.Ultimately those drawbacks are balanced out by the inter-connectivity features, the sheer size and cool design of this set, and the balanced presence of 4 mini-figs. It's not mine or my son's favorite addition to the King's Castle, but it's a worthy purchase simply for the amount of options it adds if you already have other sets in this series.I rated Lego Castle The Gatehouse Raid 5 stars because it is a cool set. I paid a little over $20 for this and it is totally worth it. The jail, gate, catapult, tower is so fun to play with the four characters included and horse! The shekels, weapons, helmets and other gear are fantastic.Overall, IMO this is one of the best small sets that Lego produces, totally worth the price and hours of fun!A Mom's Review:You can use this inexpensive Gatehouse Raid set to expand the King's Castle LEGO set. This set interlocks with the castle using long LEGO Technic poles and 1x4 bricks (with side holes). This is a great set with tons of play value on its own, and it comes with 4 minifigs, a horse, weapons, a dungeon, and the gatehouse itself.Buy multiples.I bought this along with the LEGO Castle Dragon Mountain set. The only disappointing pieces in both sets are the helmet and visor for the knights. They're not the shiny metallic plastic, instead they're a dull gray plastic. That doesn't take away from the overall likability of the set, so it's still a great set. My preschooler daughter loves the horse along with the dragon from the other set. This was a gift. I guess if you want something that can help with special understanding, creativity, imagination and well it is a nice quiet thing for kids (or man child) to do that gets them off the phone, tablet, or video game system for a little while. My five year old son has just gotten into regular Legos after playing with the larger Lego Duplos since he was two. He loves the Castle series and plays with them on almost a daily basis. While he needs help in building the actual castles/forts, he often just likes free building with these sets and making his own creations. I would highly recommend these sets as they come with many pieces and figures that can be used for much more than just building castles. My 7-year-old loves Legos. This is one of the more complex sets. And what I like is that it is a set that can be played with lots after assembled. Because it is Lego brand, it stays together while playing too. The only thing I don't like are the mini pieces that you catapult. I'm afraid to vacuum the carpet in my son's room as a result. This is not a big set, this is a set that you would buy at Walmart or Target for around $20 or so.Gift for my grandson, we had a ball assembling and then playing with it.Recommend it for any kid who enjoys Legos...Arrived quickly, fun to assemble.Awesome
