Emmett is necessary for drilling, but that is about it, since Wyldstyle (who comes with the Starter) can do the master building and The Doctor can fix things. Unfortunately, he is necessary in order to get everything since many of his hire-a-hero areas are glitchy (or intentionally made that way so you have to buy him). He is pretty unnecessary aside from the drilling ability and that is the only reason we bought him.His excavator is pretty mundane. It can dig, but so can regular characters that you probably already own or will own and using the characters for this task is more convenient and sometimes the only way you can dig (underwater or on an elevated surface that the excavator cannot fit on). The robot is kind of cool, but there are vehicles I would rather use (say Gollumn's spider).
