Recently got back into Legoes, so I filled up my cart with lots of different kits, including this one. It came on time and the box arrived undamaged.I noticed a tiny piece of plastic chipped off of a brick, but I paid it no mind as I wanted to get building. Assembly was normal, except for a strange clicking sound. I've built quite a few kits by now, and that was the first time I've heard it. Once I got to the roof assembly, I immediately saw why: the pieces were brittle. They cracked as I snapped them in place. Maybe a third or so of the roof bricks are broken just from typical use exactly once. Same thing happened with the trunk of the tree. Bit bummed out by that.I'd knock off a star or two for that, but this is an old set. I saw 2011 on the back of the instructions and, as I said, I saw no evidence that this was anyone's fault. It's not like the box was crunched or I got a used set or anything.**Update December 2013: this set has had a long run and is now finally out of stock at both Amazon (proper) and Lego. It will likely be delisted soon from Lego's catalog. This was a great set, but prices are rising well above the MSRP of 29.99. If you can find them at MSRP, sets #31010 and #31012 are very good. Set 31025, Mountain Hut, will be available 1/1/14, hopefully at the same price as the Log Cabin.**Lego's Creator line is one of my favorite because the sets avoid the use of really specialized pieces and, instead, focus on the creative use of more basic pieces. This is much closer to the way Lego sets were when I grew up. You can, of course, buy the bulk Lego sets, but I find those boxes provide too many 2x4 bricks and not enough of the one-stud wide bricks and other key elements (like angled roof pieces). Creator sets like this one provide a great mix of very useful pieces, often in colors that are hard to find. And because these come with directions for multiple builds, they encourage rebuilding and experimentation. This year's first Creator house is a tidy little log cabin (there is another house, #5771 Hillside House, arriving later in the year, as well as a lighthouse island, #5770). This one is on the small side and it is not built on a baseplate but on a number of small plates (this represents a bit of shrinkage compared to years past). But it has a great color scheme, especially the dark roof tiles, and it has plenty of windows. There is a fireplace, one mini-figure, an ingenious kayak, a tree, and a fire pit with a spit. The top lifts off and the back side (of the A-model) opens up like a giant door; my kids have a lot of fun with this latter feature. The set has decent playability, though it really shines if you have other Lego people and things (vehicles, animals, droids, whatever) to expand the storyline. And since the cabin is unfurnished, your kids may want to make their own brick beds, brick tables and brick chairs.Overall this is a very useful set with a lot of possibilities and a modest price tag. It makes a good gift because if you don't like one design, it is easily changed into something else.CheersWith five boys, I can't tell you how many Lego sets we have purchased over the years, and I don't even want to think about how much we have spent. But they love them, and I love that they are using their imagination. In November, our 5 year old got it into his head that he needed a house for his Lego characters. Since he has Spongebob Sets, I assumed he would want Spongebob's house. I was wrong. He saw this one as we were looking around online, and had his heart set on it. Well, Santa brought it to him for Christmas, and this was the first thing he opened up.At 5, he has neither the dexterity nor the patience to put something like this together (over 350 pieces) but he enjoyed helping me look for the pieces I told him we needed, and he played happily with the figure that comes with the set and the little canoe that I built first. The house itself is "so cool" (my son's words!). It has a little sofa and a fireplace that are inside the house, and you can swing the back of the house open to play inside. What I think is cool, is that you can pick one of three different configurations, though we stuck with the cabin on the package.Great set for the price!LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the log cabin theme!!!!! And the outdoors! The two other cavin sets were purchased as well! Love the moose, eagle, wolf, fish! Love it all! I gifted this to my 53 year old self and owner of a hunting and fishing lodge! This is a fabulous set. Not only have I purchased it for my kids, but I've gotten it as a gift 4 times.Kids can build three different things and the set comes with a lot of great pieces to help you build with your own imagination too.Just keep an eye on the price. Thirty-five bucks is probably all I'd pay for it and most of the time I got it on sale and paid less.A small set, but a nice one. One of the smaller Creator house sets, but one of the nicer ones. Being a log cabin makes it unique. And, it comes with a minifig. The kayak is a fun build. Too bad it doesn't have a light brick. The cabin is the best build of the 3 buildings. This set came out at that same time as the Light House and Seaside House. The Light House is my favorite of those 3, but the Log Cabin is nice in it's own right. Lots of playability and accessories. A great addition to the City and Creator House sets.My grandson absolutely loves this set. He loves to build one of the cabins, tear it down and build another one. He is only 4-years-old, but he can follow the directions easily. There are three booklets--one for each of the cabins. The instructions are broken down into sections that build upon one another, making it easy for even a younger child who cannot read. He does know his numbers, so he can tell at a glance how man of each part he needs, and the instructions show him exactly where the pieces need to go. This set keeps him busy for hours!son loves it
